When and How to Say "I Just Can't Do It!"

We naturally hesitate to tell our boss when we can't do something or are feeling overwhelmed in our job. Bosses don't want to hear that, right? Well, it depends.
In many situations, your boss is so busy that he/she doesn't keep track of how much work you're doing. When your boss gives you a new project, he's not thinking about all the other projects you're already working on.
And here's the kicker -- unless you speak up and tell your boss that you can't handle the workload he's giving you, he'll assume everything is fine.
This can have bad consequences for you AND your boss. You know what will happen. Eventually things will start falling through the cracks or you'll rush through tasks and start making mistakes.
You can only do so much in a day, and deadlines will be missed. While you're stressing out, work that your boss needs you to do is NOT being done.
When this happens, your boss will not appreciate your excuse: "But I had too much to do, I was overloaded with work!" Saying that AFTER the fact will be much worse than telling your boss up front -- before mistakes occur or deadlines are missed -- that you're having trouble with your workload.
It is your responsibility to tell your boss when you are overwhelmed, and there's nothing wrong with doing this.
Of course, you don't want to tell your boss, "I can't do that; I'm too busy." But you can say, "I'll be happy to take that on, but I need your help with prioritizing the other projects you've already given me. Which jobs can I put on hold or delegate to someone else while I work on this new one?"
That's way better than keeping your mouth shut, trying to do too much, and failing miserably.

Do More than Expected to Get Ahead

One of the best things you can do to increase your career advancement opportunities where you work is to do more than expected.
It's often not enough to just do a fine job and expect promotions now and then based on longevity. So find opportunities to show you can handle more responsibility or different duties than those in your job description. >vacancy
Here's one example from my own personal experience. I had a great job as the executive assistant to the general manager. But I often didn't have enough to do to keep me busy. I hate being bored, and I enjoy writing. So I began writing articles and submitting them for the employee newsletter, even though none were solicited.
The editor liked what I wrote, and every article I submitted was accepted and published. Readers even began looking forward to my articles.
One day the editor left for a position with another company. Having already demonstrated my writing talent, I was asked to apply for the job. I had to go through the standard hiring process and compete with other applicants, but because I had volunteered to write articles, the hiring manager had first-hand knowledge of my capabilities and I was hired. Not only was this a promotion, it was a move into a position that I found much more challenging and rewarding.
So look around and take advantage of opportunities to do more than expected. You'll enjoy more job satisfaction, help others, and -- just maybe -- get rewarded for your efforts! > employee

Mystery Shopper Job Opportunities Are Out There

**Career job information for job seekers and find good   employment job

 by: Gail Sterner
I am a mystery shopper. I did not plan on becoming a mystery shopper, I fell into mystery shopping. It all started when my daughter wrote an eguide: Become a Mystery Shopper. She asked me to help her set up a web site, and I offered to read the eguide. I knew she had been doing mystery shopping but I did not know much about mystery shopper job opportunities. After reading the eguide, I decided I would see if I could find mystery shopper jobs for myself, and I did. Here are some tips if you want to become a mystery shopper.
You will need basic equipment: a computer with access to the Internet, email, and a stop watch or a digital watch that displays seconds.
Many shops require pictures or scanned receipts; you will find more shopper job opportunities if you have a scanner and a digital camera. So, once you start making money, you will want to make the investment in the additional equipment.
There is more to mystery shopping than 'just shopping'! You will be required to observe and remember details from each shop. You must be able to focus, and remember all the requirements of the shop to be sure you ask the right questions, and perform the shop exactly as required. You must be organized and prepared for each shop. After each shop you will be required to complete an online questionnaire with the details of the shop.
Banks, national restaurant chains, movie theaters, grocery stores, discount stores and convenience stores are examples of the businesses that have mystery shopper jobs. They do not hire a mystery shopper directly, but go through a third party mystery shopper agency. The agency will manage the mystery shopper program for them. The agency will post the mystery shopper job opportunities, track the results, and pay the mystery shopper.
Some mystery shopper jobs are questionnaires and are multiple choice forms and may require a short paragraph. Other mystery shopper job opportunities require a very detailed written description of the mystery shopper experience. Be sure you understand the reporting requirement and that you are comfortable with completing the mystery shop.
A mystery shopper must be very organized. You have to keep track of the job opportunities assigned to you: the date to shop, the date the report is due, and of course whether you have been paid. Typically, you will be paid once a month for the completed mystery shopper jobs. So be sure you know the payment schedule of the mystery shopper agency, so you know when to expect payment.
In order to pay you, the legitimate companies will require your social security number or tax id. Be sure you are registering with a legitimate company on a secure web page. (A secure web page will have a lock in the right corner of your browser and the URL at the top of the page begins with https not http.) Some companies pay only PayPal accounts, and your registered email with that company and the email associated with the PayPal account must match.
And remember a legitimate web site with mystery shopper job opportunities will NOT charge a fee to view the mystery shopper jobs.

Public Relations Job Description

**Career job information for job seekers and find good   employment job

In PR careers especially in small organizations, the PR personnel directing public relations or handling an individual's publicity or public image, often has to deal with the job's every single aspect which can be quite stressful and involves huge responsibility. These kinds of PR personnel have to conduct research, make planning, contact people and also prepare or supervise the preparation of materials that have to be distributed.
A public accountant job description can be summed up in what most people envision as "typical" accountant's work. It involves performing a broad range of accounting, auditing, tax, and consulting activities for their clients, which may be corporations, governments, nonprofit organizations, and individuals. Specialties in public accounting are often chosen. For example, a public accountant may choose to concentrate on tax matters, such as advising companies about the tax advantages and disadvantages of certain business decisions and preparing individual income tax returns.
Much of the work today is done on computers as many new software have been developed that are used for drafting and doing other architecture job designs. So sound knowledge of all these is must to complete the work on time. The job of an architect is not done in isolation but it needs close liaison with other professionals like surveyors, engineers, construction workers and suppliers. So an architect must be familiar with all these, how they work, what products they use and what quantity is required.
Specialists have the ability to arrange and manage engagements in speaking, press meetings, conferences, and conventions. They also engage in films or videos, and fund raising promotions. They are more often than not prepare many resources for the said events; for example, they have to prepare speeches and press releases, scripts, magazine articles, pamphlets, fact sheets, and newsletters. Sometimes, they should conduct interviews and telephone speaking on a regular basis.
The piece of the equation that is advertising has the sole responsibility of putting your product or service where the public can see it. Advertising lets the consumer know what it is that you have to offer, then lets them know why exactly they need it. A company could pay a pretty penny for advertising; in fact the advertising budget is often the largest part of the marketing plan's expenditure. As the saying goes, "you have to spend money to make money."
Some of the more popular musicians and bands often get them selves caught in political and media firestorms over their perceptions and comments about events, people and concepts in our society and that is when a good public relations specialist can separate their brilliance from the baggage of their often high-strung words and fierce perspective based comments.

Job Search: Holiday Dead Zones for Job Seekers

**Career job information for job seekers and find good   employment job

With November and the upcoming holidays in the air, the turf changes for hiring that can be either problematic for job seekers, or an opportunity. As a job seeker you will do much better during this season if you are prepared ahead of time for how the business environment is likely to change.

The Dead Zone is basically an acknowledgement of the behavior that the majority of businesses take during the holidays. Starting with Thanksgiving, in most businesses other than retail, there begins a massive evacuation of employees taking advantage of holiday closures to spend time with family. The week of Thanksgiving kicks off about 6 weeks of a dead zone for hiring. While many of the businesses are open, you are typically faced with a skeletal staff and missing decision makers. The people who remain behind are there primarily to keep the gears moving, even if it is slow. The only work that tends to get done during this period is what is minimally required to ensure that the primary function of the business continues. The work that almost comes to a stop is usually strategic planning, decision making and those things not directly supporting the primary function. An example is in manufacturing companies where you will see shipping and order-taking continue, but many functions like marketing, sales and support functions are all on hold. What this means for you is that hiring is one of those activities that will come to such a crawl it looks like there is no hiring at all. For some companies, they will only pursue hiring where there is a critical need AND the hiring manager is available enough in that 6-week period to actually make some progress.

During this dead zone you are facing 3 weeks with fewer work days, which makes those weeks primary targets for vacations, plus a week or two on both sides of it, if they are banking their hours. For the remaining days, those are usually spent “playing catch up”. Does any of this sound familiar? The meaning for you, if you’re a job seeker, is that for the vast majority of businesses, you can’t expect too much activity around hiring. If you have an interview the week before Thanksgiving, you’ll be lucky for a decision to get made for 2-3 weeks, at best. If you’re fortunate enough to get an interview in early December, a decision probably won’t get made until the second week of January, if all goes well. Most likely, it would be the third week in January.
Does that mean you should absolutely back off during the dead zone? Not necessarily. If you are working your network, you might find that they have idle time on their hands, making it worth your effort to take advantage of the slow time in the office. The warning is mostly around your expectations of the process. You can’t expect many hiring decisions to be taking place. Resume processing will be sluggish and then there will be a glut of paper to be processed on the other side of the holidays. The opportunity is that if someone is around, you will do well to make contact, which is super because you might be the thing that will break up a boring day. Mostly, you need to set your expectations that people won’t be around, won’t be available, and won’t be checking voicemail or email and what little processing is going on, will be painfully slow.
There is a bright light in the holiday seasons and that is retail. If you are up for temporary holiday work, now is the time to start filling out company applications. Many times those jobs turn into permanent positions making it well worth your time to get on board. Even if it doesn’t turn into a job after the holidays, it will bring in income and fill the time productively while the rest of the companies are going into a holiday sugar coma. Keep in mind that there is more to retail than the store fronts. The bigger retailers have warehouse, stocking and other support functions that are also needed. Extending from the retailers are the logistics and shipping companies that also have to add additional staff to support all of the shipping and order taking. The holiday season can create opportunities for getting a job, as long as you are willing to look. With a bit of creativity and investigation, you will discover a number of businesses that increase their staff in order to accommodate the various demands of the season.
If you are unemployed, this can also be a prime time to seek out a volunteer opportunity that will capitalize on your skills. Just like the businesses that increase their activities this time of year, the same type of cycle of decrease and increase happens in the nonprofit universe. Volunteering will help you fill gaps in your resume, increase your network and make you feel great.

The holidays do present a challenge for job seekers, especially if the industry you are focusing on is one with a clear dead zone. That doesn’t mean you stop everything, but it does mean you should think through what is apt to happen until after the first of the year and modify your plan accordingly.

Are You Making the Most of Your LinkedIn Profile In Your Job Search?

**Career job information for job seekers and find good   employment job

Although hiring appears to have picked up a little over the last month or so, some sectors are still cutting back. We still talk to job seekers who are finding themselves out in the job market for the first time in a long time. These candidates often feel overwhelmed and don’t really know where to start with their job searches. Obviously, getting a polished, keyword-rich resume together is one of the most important steps. For many, a step that is equally important is creating or updating their LinkedIn profiles.

Studies show that the majority of recruiters and hiring managers now use LinkedIn at some point during the hiring process. So it’s not just important to have a LinkedIn profile but to have a complete profile that focuses on your brand and what you can offer the employer. You want your profile to show up in the top of search results and then convince the hiring manager to make contact.

LinkedIn also offers somewhat of a one-stop shop for a hiring manager trying to learn more about the candidate behind that fabulous resume on his desk (that would be you!) If you have recommendations on your profile, your candidacy receives instant credibility. If the companies you’ve worked for have created company pages on LinkedIn, the hiring manager can instantly learn things like how big the organization is and its Web site address without having to search around. Your LinkedIn profile also offers you the opportunity to create a more personal connection and communicate additional information not included in your resume.

So what’s in it for you? Besides allowing hiring managers to actively search for you or learn more about you once you’ve applied, LinkedIn also offers you a fabulous opportunity to research companies in which you’re interested. There’s probably no other place on the Web where you can find information like what percentage of the employees at a particular company have a master’s degree or attended particular schools. Wouldn’t you feel more confident walking into an interview knowing that 20% of an organization graduated from your alma mater?

If the idea of creating an attention-grabbing LinkedIn profile feels overwhelming, our professional branding experts can do it for you!

3 Strategies for Making it Past the Initial 5-Second Resume Scan

**Career job information for job seekers and find good   employment job

I’ve heard it said various ways that you get a 5-, 7-, or 30-second initial scan from the hiring manager. I can tell you personally that when I was an HR manager and had 100 resumes to go through, my initial scan was about 5 seconds long, and I was looking for something to catch my eye. Here are the three areas I looked at when considering whether to invest more time:

PROFESSIONAL FORMATTING
When you’re reviewing 100 resumes a day, the ones that really stick out are the ones in which you can tell the person invested time into creating. The professional and executive resume formats that were well-organized, easy to read, and perfectly laid out really made reviewing the resume easier—and definitely caught my attention. When you’re comparing a professionally organized and strategically laid out resume to a messy, unprofessional, and disorganized one, the choice of which one to invest time into reading becomes a no-brainer. After all, why waste time searching through a document trying to find the info you need when someone else has clearly laid it out for you?

EASY-TO-FIND REQUIREMENTS
When I posted a job ad online and was deluged with responses, I was appalled at how many people just shot me a resume that said absolutely nothing about the requirements that I had spent so much time writing to include in the ad. Normally, when I posted a job ad I would include: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS and PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS. At the very least, to even be considered, the person had to possess the required qualifications; and the resumes that caught my attention were the ones that made it easy for me to see that they did indeed meet the requirements—either by listing them in the top or calling attention to them in a bold, underlined, or italicized font and placed throughout their resume. Want to put the nail in the coffin? (I know, Halloween humor ... groan ...) Call attention to the fact that you also meet their preferred qualifications. Meeting the required and preferred qualifications—and calling attention to this fact in your resume—makes you a perfect candidate for the job.

COMPELLING, EASY-TO-READ CONTENT
Long paragraphs on resumes serve one purpose ... and that’s to lose the hiring manager’s attention. If you’re using paragraphs with 5+ sentences then you not only lost my attention, but now the info I need isn’t readily accessible; it’s buried beneath an enormous amount of text density that I don’t have the time to wade through. Keep it concise, cut out the mundane, and highlight your accomplishments. Don’t go super crazy with the bold, underline, or italics, but use them when it fits, and use them to call attention to the most important information.

Just to review—here’s how to make it past the initial 5-second scan:
1) Professional, polished, and well-organized format (colors and white space, good—messy and distracting, bad.)
2) Make it easy for the hiring manager to find exactly what he or she needs—and to find it quickly.
3) Keep the content concise, and highlight the critical information the hiring manager needs in order to make the decision to call for the interview.

Other strategies come into play when creating a compelling resume that will secure interviews, so if you’re not sure your resume has the right stuff—and if you haven’t heard of personal branding or incorporated it into your resume—it may be time to call a certified resume writer and get a resume checkup. If it means the difference between 3 interviews next week or 3 more months of job searching, you may want to consider speaking with a professional.  http://www.sooperarticles.com

Employment -- The ‘Other’ Marriage

**Career job information for job seekers and find good   employment job

Recruiting, and ultimately hiring, an employee for a small company is like getting married all over again! You’re practically living with this person for more hours each day than you probably spend with your spouse. Do you spend the time and energy developing the relationship necessary to determine if this is a good “fit”? Or, do you think you can just “divorce” the candidate if it doesn’t work out? Beware, getting out of an employment relationship can be costly!

“Like all successful ventures, the employment relationship begins with planning,” states Deanne Ferguson, president of F.O.C.U.S. Management Group, and outsourced human resource department located in Eagan, Minnesota “If you can’t define the goal before you begin, how will you know when you’ve achieved it? Without a plan, the probability is greater that the wrong person will be hired; a poor selection decision may lead to a firing decision later. Many months are wasted, many dollars are spent, and the frustration makes it even more difficult for management to continue the search.”

According to Ferguson, there are three basic rules of employment planning:

1. Define the expected job performance as specifically and completely as possible before you start looking for candidates. Would you start a trip without first mapping your course?

2. Look for the key factors that lead to successful job performance in all job candidates, i.e. years of experience, level of education, motivation and technical skills.

3. Devote sufficient time to the process. If you don’t plan and you hurry towards an artificial deadline, you can find yourself in the firing process very quickly. “Warm bodies” hiring can buy you some major problems in the future.

Given these three basic rules, Ferguson further defines the employee selection decision as an eight-step process:

1. Define expected performance. Do you have an accurate job description?

2. Identify key factors. Do you know what the qualified person’s background will include?

3. Generate candidates for the position. Do you know where to recruit?

4. Collect key factor information about each candidate. Are you a skilled interviewer?

5. Evaluate candidates in terms of key factors. Can you separate personality from the skills?

6. Select the most qualified candidate. Are you able to make an objective selection?

7. Check references thoroughly before extending an offer. Do you check all references?

8. Extend an offer of employment in writing. Do you have a formal offer letter?

Although there is not a “normal” turnover rate for all companies, Business & Legal Reports, Inc. published a report in June of 1995 which estimated turnover at 2.6 percent in small employers.

Turnover is not cheap! It’s not unusual to spend several thousand dollars in ads, management time and lost productivity while training. When you consider the disruption to your customer base and the image presented when turnover continues, it is definitely an important topic for discussion at your management meetings.

“The employment relationship, like a marriage, needs to be nurtured and cared for,” concludes Ferguson. “What do you think would happen if the day after your wedding you proceeded to do what you’d always done before your marriage? If you didn’t include your new spouse in your daily routine, how long do you think the marriage would last?

“It’s the same with a new employee. Do you have the person’s first week on the job arranged? Who will be there to walk him or her around and make introductions? Is a desk and phone ready? Who will review the new hire paperwork and make sure the necessary forms, such as a W-4 and I-9, are completed? This part of the hiring process is just as critical as the activity that has gone on before. You want the new person to feel part of the team, and that you are glad he or she is here. Be prepared!”

As an outsourced human resources department, F.O.C.U.S. Management Group has helped numerous small businesses with critical hiring decisions in a non-traditional manner. Companies pay for F.O.C.U.S. Management’s service only when they use it, Ferguson explains, which frees them from paying year-round overhead or the standard 25 to 35 percent placement fees. (ARA)

Job Status and Credit Status, a CloseRelationship

**Career job information for job seekers and find good   employment job

Really? The answer unfortunately is yes, your credit status can have an impact on your ability to get a job in the current economy. How do I know this? Real world examples.
I have a part time accountant and she is a good employee. If I had the need for a full time resource, then she would not have to be out looking for other part time work. My employee, we'll call her Sally, has over 30 years of experience as an accountant, backed by a 4 year degree from an accredited state university. Sally can crunch numbers, manage her own time, provide three decades worth of valuable advice, and she could probably balance the Federal budget if given the chance. Unfortunately Sally has had a couple of bad years. She lost her spouse, paid all of his medical bills in full, and then started moving around the country to try and support herself. A couple of bad moving decisions coupled with the housing crash and Sally's credit looks like a score at the FIFA tournament in South Africa. Not real high.
Job Search
So, Sally has been looking for work since I have known her over the last seven months. Here is the reality out there on the streets. Sally can't sell shoes at an outlet mall. Sally can not be an accountant anywhere that runs credit checks because she doesn't have any credit. Sally cannot re-establish her credit without full time work. This is a case of where the metrics are wrong. If any employer would meet Sally face to face, hear her story, and see her real worth as a person, then they would see what I see. While Sally is not the best employee I have ever had, she is worth more than an instant "NO" because of her credit score.
Employment
If you are having trouble finding employment, and it doesn't matter if you are a seasoned professional or a green sales associate, check your credit score now. Get an Equifax 3-in-1 Credit Report Now! Even if you can't fix your credit before you get that new job, talk openly about your credit with any potential employers. People making hiring decisions like honesty. I swear. Bring your credit score up in the interview and explain your situation. If you don't, it might look like you are trying to slide by the interview processing with something to hide.
That is my perspective, I would love to hear yours.

Difficulties in Finding a Fresh Job

**Career job information for job seekers and find good   employment job

To properly identify and deal with the many difficulties looking for a new career or job can throw up, or, alternatively maybe you have had a few knockbacks at the interview stage and are feeling a bit down and don't know where to go or what to do next.
When I was growing up, I vividly remember my mother making lists for absolutely everything. You couldn't move in our house without unearthing a list about something. At the time I thought it was ludicrous, there were lists for life goals, weight loss, everything. It seemed every thought she ever had could be found in paper form somewhere in the house. As I've grown older though I realize that list making is actually something that really helps you when you have thoughts you need to organize. It helps you clearly map out problems, look at them rationally and keep your thoughts organized so you go about things in the right way. For example, If I go to the supermarket without my list, I completely forget that I need things like milk or bread and usually just come back with bags of chocolate and wine, I am destined to become a fat alcoholic due to lack of other nourishment in my diet. Anyway, in this list you should be brutally honest with yourself, there is no point in glossing over points here or not putting them down, it's only you that is going to be reading and benefitting from this so to not be totally open is only cheating yourself in the long run. By doing this and addressing each point on the list separately it will give you the tools to solve them and move forward.
However, how do you answer the dreaded questions you sometimes get in interviews that probe into gaps in your job history?
Keep it short, keep it sweet and don't panic. Don't linger on the mistake if there was any and embellish the actions you took to overcome this. Make gaps look like time you spent to better your skills and don't be intimidated. http://www.sooperarticles.com

Where Are The Engineering Jobs?

**Career job information for job seekers and find good   employment job

The recession has been extremely rough on the engineering profession; especially, Civil Engineering. If you are an engineer seeking employment, you probably have noticed that job postings in the classified advertisements for your profession are rare. But believe it or not there a few companies out there who are looking for your expertise.
Researching some of the top engineering job posting sites on the internet, one can quickly see that the number of job postings has been drastically reduced compared to several years ago. In my state of Nevada it is extremely hard to find any postings, but other states like California and Texas the postings are much better.
Which of the 5 geographical areas in the United would fair better; Northwest, Mid-west, Northeast, Southeast, or Southwest? We could get a rough idea by researching the main job posting websites on the internet, and calculate the following: the number of civil engineering job postings, number jobs in geographical areas, and the states with the highest number of job postings.
After reviewing several sites a pattern emerged that was a little surprising. None of the sites had a very quantity of Civil Engineering job postings. States like Rhode Island and South Dakota would consistently show zero to extremely low number of listings. Usually States like Delaware, Kentucky, North Dakota, and West Virginia would have only 1 or 2 listings.
Every website that we researched resulted in the southwest region having the highest number of job postings. The majority of the postings in the southwest were in two States; California and Texas.
1. Southwest Region – According to the various websites, this region had the highest number of job postings. The job postings in California and Texas were about seventy percent of the region's total number.
2. Southeast Region – This region's job posting numbers were very close to the Southwest region numbers. The job posting number were closer spread out over the States. Florida, Virginia, and Washington DC area typically had the highest number of postings.
3. Northeast Region – The states of New Jersey, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania typical had the highest job postings in this region, but Rhode Island and Vermont were usually the lowest.
4. Mid West Region – This region consist of the most States, but had very low job posting numbers for each State. Illinois's and Ohio's job postings made up about 50% of the regions total number.
5. Northwest Region – This region showed the lowest number of job postings on all of the websites we reviewed. With about 70% of the job postings the State of Washington had the highest number of postings in this region.
What does the results of this survey mean to you? Without question the recession is still impacting the engineering profession as is clearly demonstrated by our survey. The best place to look for a Civil Engineering job right now is probably California, Florida, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas or the Washington DC area. According to the job postings websites, the rest of the country is not hiring. http://www.sooperarticles.com

Restate the department goals to the team. This should happen during a standard team meeting. Clarity of purpose is a big motivator. Outline how each person contributes to the department goal. Then outline how the department contributes to the overall organization.
  4. 4
Once you are aware of team and individual motivations, and have clearly stated the department goals and everyone's responsibility and accountability to the goals, watch individual and team performance.
  5. 5
Reward individual effort. A simple hand-written note, an email if in a remote location or a phone call--these are all something to let the employee know you noticed. This is a tremendous motivator.
  6. 6
Key assignments. Give one of your best people a key project assignment or delegate some of your more important work to them. Demonstrating the trust you have in their abilities is a good motivator.
  7. 7
Representative opportunities. Give one of your best people the opportunity to attend a meeting with superiors on your behalf. Let them make some decisions for the department in the meeting. This demonstration of shared responsibility and trust is a great motivator.

How to Determine the Criteria for Employee Layoffs

**Career job information for job seekers and find good   employment job
If you are in the unfortunate position of having to lay off workers, it is important to determine the criteria for employees layoffs carefully to avoid making mistakes.

The best way to decide on criteria for employee lay offs varies from company to company, based on factors such as number of employees, projects being worked on, pay scale, employee overlap and more.
Read the steps below to help your company come up with fair and justified criteria for employee layoffs.

Instructions

  1. 1
Consider the legal implications of laying off an employee - Some employees might have legal reasons why they cannot be laid off or need extra warning or benefits in doing so. These employees could include pregnant females, minorities, disabled, etc. Speak to a lawyer to determine if any restrictions apply to your company.
  2. 2
Consider the employee's general attitude - Most companies would agree that one of the most important criteria for employee layoffs is the employee's attitude. This includes the employee's work ethics, moral, flexibility, team playing skills, job motivation, etc. An employee who is generally difficult to work with is often the first to go. Not only is this employee not productive, but productivity of fellow workers also slides when (s)he is around.
  3. 3
Consider the employee's usefulness - Unfortunately, some employees are more useful than others. This could be because of job function (some functions are just less useful in the company) or because of the worker's personality. Some workers are more willing to take on additional tasks beyond their bare minimal job descriptions - these employees will be especially useful after other workers are laid off.
  4. 4
Consider the employee's skills - Does this employee have skills that are unique or does this employee have skills that are duplicated by many other staff members.
  5. 5
Consider the future of the company - Which projects is the company focusing on now and in the future? Is the employee that you are considering laying off a main player in one of the future projects or is (s)he mainly involved in a project that is dying out? You may want to transfer important employees from one project to another, but this consideration is still part of the criteria for employee lay off.
  6. 6
Consider the employee's pay in comparison to his/her usefulness - Is the employee being overpaid relative to their amount of contribution? Some employees are very talented and worth a lot of money, but they are not used to their full potential and are therefore not worth their high pay. Other employees may be receiving a very high pay but are a key employee in the company and are therefore worthwhile to keep on.
  7. 7
Consider when the employee was hired - Newly hired workers are often the first to let go when company layoffs are performed because they have contributed the least to the company and will be missed the least. However, criteria for company layoffs should focus not just on newly hired workers, but on how long all workers have been at the company. Ethically, some companies might want to keep on employees who have been at the company many years because of the employees' contribution in the early days and a feeling that laying them off would be a lack of gratitude. Although years at the job is not the only criteria, this combined with other criteria is important to consider.
  8. 8
Consider trade secrets an employee might have - Some employees are valuable because they hold knowledge about your company or corporation. Some are valuable because they have a unique skill that cannot be easily replaced.

How to Fire an Employee Legally

**Career job information for job seekers and find good   employment job

Hiring a great employee is exhilarating. Firing a bad one can be painful--and fraught with legal land mines. Sometimes you get lucky: The employee, realizing his job is in jeopardy, resigns. If not, the following steps will help make the task less onerous--as well as less susceptible to litigation.

Instructions

  1. 1
Ask your human resources department to help you with your plan for termination. There is a quagmire of regulations for both union and nonunion employees.
  2. 2
Establish an extensive paper trail. Don't sugarcoat the problems in the employee's performance review (see How to Prepare for a Salary Review). A record of specific warnings and a proposed corrective action plan with the employee's signature should be on file, preferably at least 90 days before the actual firing.
  3. 3
Ask an attorney or labor relations specialist to look over the file. Investing time and money on an expert employment attorney before the termination can save agony and the far greater costs of a postfiring lawsuit.
  4. 4
Assemble a package of detailed exit information for the employee. Include severance package information and an account of any benefits due.
  5. 5
Prepare a list of all company-issued property--from keys and credit cards to computers and cellular phones--to collect from the employee. Back up any important files to which the employee has access and arrange to terminate his or her computer access within an agreed-upon time frame.
  6. 6
Have a witness present at the meeting. A third party tends to diffuse emotional outbursts and offers a good defense against a later "he said, she said" dispute.
  7. 7
Plan what you're going to say and then stick to your script as closely as possible. If necessary, review your plan with someone from human resources. Get to the point quickly; enumerate the offenses, the warnings issued and the failure to implement the listed corrective actions. Resolve to remain calm even if the employee becomes emotional or combative.
  8. 8
Have all waivers and agreements ready to sign. Your best protection against a future lawsuit is a signed release of liability. If possible, make any optional severance pay or benefits extensions dependent on that signing.
  9. 9
Remember that any future reference calls about the terminated employee should confirm only dates of employment and salary to avoid possible litigation.

Online Job Hunting?

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

Everyone's doing it now - looking for a job online. But there are so many places to visit and so much information online. How can you make sure you're getting the best result from your online job search?
Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your time online.

Check Niche Sites:
As well as checking the major newspaper and online job sites, you want to look at specialty sites. Niche job sites target jobs according to industry. For example, if you are in the call centre industry, look for a job site that features only call centre related jobs. Often, these sites do a better job of categorizing and promoting opportunities. In addition, you aren't wasting your time sifting through thousands of jobs that may or may not be what you are looking for.

Use Search Engines:
How do you find these specialty job sites? Search for them through search engines such as Google. If you are looking for a job in the insurance industry, try searching using keywords like "insurance job canada" (without the quotes.)

Find "Hidden" Jobs:
When you are searching for a job at a job posting site, try searching specific locations. For example, when searching for a job in Ottawa, search also suburbs of the region like Nepean, Orleans, and Kanata. You might find a job closer to home and you might find something that others may have overlooked. Try also variations in the name of the job you are looking for since often job titles can vary.

Sign Up for Jobs Through Your Email:
Many sites offer these services and usually they are free. All you have to do is visit a site and sign up. You'll get the most recent jobs delivered right to you email. Make sure you check a site's privacy policies just to make sure you don't end up with unwanted spam. Often, you can select the jobs that will be sent to you by region, industy, part-time or full-time, etc.

Track Where You've Applied:
Be organized. Since there are so many places online you will be seeing, after a while, it all becomes a blur. But don't let it. Every time you see a great job that you want to apply for, send the job to your email. Include the URL and the closing date in the title so it doesn't get lost in your email inbox. Once it's in your email, create a folder called "jobs to apply for." Once you've sent in your resume, put it in another folder you create called "jobs I've applied to." That way, you know which jobs you are waiting to hear from. Once you hear from them, put them in another folder called "interviewing" or, if they decided to not entertain your resume, "declined." this is a great way to track jobs you've interviewed for, and which ones you've been unsuccessful at. You can easily find these positions again should you be looking for work 6 months from now when you have more experience.
Looking for work online can be a rewarding way of looking for a job. And the more you look, the better your research skills will become. Don't forget to look for niche sites and take advantage of services sites offer, like direct-to-your-email job postings. They can save you a lot of time and effort.
